1. Church Yard

Parish registers record over 5000 burials in the churchyard between 1603 and 1881 when the new cemetery was first used, but the majority of these are in unmarked graves. The current number of identifiable burial plots in the graveyard is 170, most of which lie close to the pathways and porches and on the favoured south and east sides of the church.

The number of unrecorded burials before 1603 is, of course uncertain, but a rule of thumb would suggest that between 972 and 1603 there were around 6300 interments.

Thus the available burial area of the churchyard certainly indicates continued re-use of burial plots, predominantly those without monuments.

There are 68 chest tombs in the churchyard of various sizes and styles; 54 of these currently appear on the schedule of listed buildings and monuments.
