News for October
Once again, the Friends of St. Mary’s Pimms’ Tent proved a popular attraction at the Hawkesbury Show this year, raising £500 for the next work that will need to be done to the fabric of our ancient church. Warmest thanks to all those who helped to put up, man the tent and prepare the refreshments during the day. Some photos may appear on the FOSM website – keep an eye open!
At the beginning of September the church yews were trimmed, with amazing precision and incredible speed, by Hansen Tree Care, and 217kg of yew clippings were collected the following day by Friendship Estates of Doncaster for processing and shipping to Italy for the manufacture of chemotherapy drugs. English yew (Taxus baccata) contains a compound, 10-Deacetylbaccatin III, which can be extracted from clippings and used as the raw material in the production of chemotherapy drugs paclitexel and docetaxel. The clippings need to be collected promptly, younger clippings are more effective than later clippings, so we are very grateful to Friendship Estates for sending their van from Doncaster at 6am on a Saturday morning to collect our yew, just before a wedding took place. If you would like to be involved in collecting yew clippings next year, please contact the FOSM secretary.
